Light, an element that forever overwhelms me. I am still learning how to draw light correctly. Cinderella is an example of the level that I want to reach. Forget Rembrandt, the Master of Light. Notice the fragile translucency of the paint. It takes years to master, I am sure.

Every one of us has probably seen a picture of Klimt, one way or another. He is the sort of artist whose style ultimately draws your attention. The stark nudes, the heavily decorated backdrops of colours and gold, the creeping vines of his trees. The adoration with which he painted women shows all through his work.
Klimt is one of those artists who do not need to be introduced. Alongside Van Gogh and Picasso, his artworks have sold for record amounts, he has reached heights where his paintings speak for themselves.

Judith 1

The internet is blooming with a wide variety of information about him, I could never cover everything about him in this article – instead, I will simply include my favourite artwork of his.

Tree of Life

From the many ink artists out there, Aubrey Beardsley has a special place in my heart, if only for the variety of topics that he covered and his mastery of line and tone.

The Death of Arthur

He contrasts areas of darkness and light, adding detail and sometimes using none at all. It is that fine line between a slender, elegant drawing and an overcrowded, dense one, what makes his illustrations stand out.
Beardsley was quite the shocking artist back in his days. His illustrations for Salome and The Yellow Book are erotic, grotesque in their enlarged organs and wild poses. He illustrated Lysistrata – which was so raw and shocking for the people of the time, that he begged the editor to destroy any surviving copies after his conversion to Catholicism.

The Peacock Skirt, from Salome

Bathyllus

Beardsley died from an illness at 25, not before creating hundreds of illustrations and delivering himself as a known eccentric of the time.

After keeping a collection of brushes for all sorts of media and different applications, I developed a number of tips for their best usage. The emerged from being an expensive luxury to an expensive necessity, and it is that change in attitude which probably helped them the most.

I don’t treasure my brushes too much, they’re meant to be used without pity. Paint will damage them, thinner will destroy them, it’s just a part of their circle of life. Extending their short livespans is done by keeping them clean and not letting them sit around in drying mug with bristles down.

I keep a variety of brushes, I think, about three thin ones of sizes 1-2 in the least. It helps take the most out of them because they don’t end up being used as much and last longer.
